HAVERSTRAW
— A new monument to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice during World
War II will be erected at the clock park in the village.
The
Rotary Club of North Rockland is leading the effort to build a six-foot-tall,
eight-foot-wide memorial in front of Haverstraw Village Hall.
At
the memorial's groundbreaking ceremony held Monday at the park, Francis
"Bud" Wassmer, former Haverstraw village mayor and president of the
North Rockland Rotary Club, welcomed dignitaries.
Wassmer
told the attendees that the surface of the black granite monument would be
etched with World War II icons such as the images of the raising of the
American flag at Mount Suribachi in Iwo Jima and US Battleship BB-62 New
Jersey.
Carole
Tjoa, past district governor of Rotary International, was one of the guests for
the ceremony.
"I'm
always appreciative of the courage and bravery of the Americans and their
allies who fought for the freedom and justice," said Tjoa, a Hong Kong
native who lived through the war in her native land.
The
unveiling for the memorial is scheduled for Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor Remembrance
Day.
The
Rotary Club is accepting donations for the project through the sale of bricks
on the paving in front of the memorial.
A
small brick can be purchased for $150 and larger ones would be available
starting at $500.
